Celiac Disease
Untreated celiac disease may result in a variety of complications including vitamin, iron, calcium and other micronutrient deficiencies. As a result, many patients are found to have anemia and osteoporosis. Other auto-immune disorders such as thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc are more likely to occur. There is also an increased incidence of all malignancies, especially those of the gastrointestinal tract. Untreated Celiac Disease may also negatively affect fertility and pregnancy. Depression possibly associated with B6 deficiency and impaired brain availability of tryptophan has been reported. Dermatitis herpetiformis (an extraordinarily itchy blistery rash) and various neurologic symptoms have been associated with celiac disease. There is also an increased incidence of infertility, miscarriages and fetal complications in untreated celiac disease. Many of these complications and risk factors improve with adherence to the gluten free diet.
